Celebrating Our Resident Physicians During Resident Doctor Appreciation Week
During Resident Doctor Appreciation Week, Stevenson Memorial Hospital is proud to recognize the dedication and compassion of the resident physicians who train and learn alongside our SMH physicians each year. These emerging physicians play an important role in patient care while gaining hands-on experience in a supportive community hospital setting.
In 2025, SMH welcomed 26 residents completing core and elective rotations in partnership with eight medical universities across Ontario. Their learning experiences are made possible through the commitment of our physician preceptors, who mentor and guide residents throughout their training. We currently have three resident physicians on-site and look forward to welcoming more throughout 2026.
Residents consistently share how meaningful their time at Stevenson has been.
“I had such an amazing time once again—you have the best nurses and staff at SMH. Can’t wait to come back!” - Demetrios, PGY1
“I’m very strongly considering coming back after I graduate. I’d love to be back.” - Bart, PGY2
“It’s been a valuable and memorable part of my training.” - Ehsan, PGY2

Current residents also highlight the unique opportunities available at Stevenson. Aisha Haji Hussein notes the broad range of services available in a community hospital setting, including access to CT and radiology.

Samrat Choudhury describes Stevenson as a collaborative environment with strong team support and opportunities for autonomy, while Duva Karunkaran shares how welcoming staff have made him feel included both in and outside the hospital, highlighting memorable experiences like ice fishing with colleagues. Hosting residents not only supports the next generation of physicians but also strengthens our community. Several former residents have returned to SMH after graduation to continue their careers here.
This week, we thank our resident physicians and preceptors for their commitment to learning, teaching and providing exceptional care. Your impact is felt across our hospital and community.
