Construction Officially Begins on New Hospital Facility at SMH

March 09, 2026

[New Tecumseth, ON – March 9, 2026] Today, Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) in partnership with the provincial government, its agency Infrastructure Ontario and general contractor Pomerleau, kicked off the construction of the new expanded hospital facility with an official groundbreaking ceremony. Several project partners and dignitaries were in attendance, including Premier Doug Ford and Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones.

“Today marks the beginning of a new future for Stevenson Memorial Hospital,” says Carmine Stumpo, Supervisor, SMH. “This community – from families and local businesses to donors and local municipalities, have all played a part in making this become a reality.”

“We are extremely grateful for everyone who has supported the hospital along the way, and will continue to do so as we build a health care facility that will transform health care services in New Tecumseth,” he adds.
Construction of the new 147,100 square-foot facility will begin on the hospital’s property and will start to take shape in the coming months. Construction is slated to be complete by late 2028.

“We are building a new health care facility that will meet the needs of a growing community and provide the space, modern amenities and comfort that patients and families deserve,” says Stumpo. “The state-of-the-art facility will increase patient bed capacity by 20 per cent, will feature all single-occupancy patient rooms, and will be equipped with modern technology and equipment to support exceptional health care services delivered by our dedicated staff and physicians,” he adds.

The new facility will also include an expanded Diagnostic Imaging Department with MRI services, a first for SMH.
