Arianna Barrett: Bringing Nourishment, Care, and Community to SMH

Arianna Barrett recently joined Stevenson Memorial Hospital’s Food Services team, bringing with her more than a decade of experience in dietary services and a deep commitment to patient care. For her, healthcare support isn’t just about preparing meals; it’s about creating comfort, connection, and community for every patient.
“I was inspired to pursue a career in healthcare support services through my past experience working in a smaller hospital setting, where I saw how a strong sense of community can make a real difference for both patients and staff,” Arianna shares. “I was drawn to Stevenson Memorial Hospital because it offers that same close-knit, family-like environment, where team members across departments know and support one another while working toward a shared goal of quality patient care.”
Being a Black Canadian has shaped Arianna’s approach to her work, bringing empathy, awareness, and cultural sensitivity to every interaction. “Being a Black Canadian has shaped my experience in healthcare by giving me a strong sense of empathy and awareness when working with patients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. It has also deepened my appreciation for the importance of cultural understanding and respect, reminding me that everyone’s experiences and needs are unique.”
For Arianna, the most rewarding part of her role is the daily impact she can make on patients’ lives. “What I find most rewarding about my role at SMH is knowing that I help provide nourishment and comfort to patients each day. Since patients can’t simply leave to choose their own meals, I take pride in helping create a positive dining experience and making it one of the best parts of their day.”
Over her 12+ years in dietary services, Arianna has navigated challenges like adapting to new hospital environments and working with diverse teams. “I’ve navigated these by staying organized, learning from each experience, and collaborating with colleagues. Turning challenges into opportunities to grow and improve patient care,” she explains. Her cultural background also allows her to connect deeply with patients and colleagues. “Sometimes it’s the little things like acknowledging a patient’s preferences or being a listening ear. That can have a meaningful impact, and my background helps me bring that sensitivity to everyday interactions.”
“I see my work contributing to a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment by treating every patient with respect and care, making sure their needs and preferences are valued. I also support my colleagues by collaborating, sharing knowledge, and making sure everyone feels heard.” She believes diversity across all hospital teams strengthens both workplace culture and patient care: “Seeing diversity across all roles helps patients and colleagues feel seen and valued, creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.”
Mentorship and guidance have been important influences in Arianna’s career. “Throughout my career, I’ve been influenced by mentors, colleagues, and even my family, all of whom have shown me the importance of professionalism, empathy, patience, and teamwork. Their guidance and example have shaped the way I approach every interaction with patients and coworkers, inspiring me to continuously learn, improve, and lead by example.”
Representation is also a cause close to Arianna’s heart. “One thing I wish more people understood is how important it is to see Black professionals in leadership roles. Representation matters, not just for colleagues, but for patients and for young Black Canadians entering the healthcare community. When young professionals see leaders who look like them in various roles throughout the hospital, it shows them that their career goals are achievable, encourages them to stay engaged, and fosters a sense of belonging.”
Arianna’s advice for young Black Canadians considering healthcare careers is simple but powerful: “Stay curious, ask questions, and embrace every opportunity to learn. Believe in yourself and the unique perspective you bring. Your presence matters. By showing up authentically, you not only grow in your career, but also help create a more inclusive environment and inspire others who may follow in your footsteps.”
Arianna Barrett embodies the values of care, empathy, and community that make Stevenson Memorial Hospital a place where patients and staff alike feel supported and valued. Through her work, she continues to nourish not only the bodies but also the spirits of those around her.
