SMH Resuming Elective Surgeries Using Phased Approach

[New Tecumseth, ON – February 23, 2022] With approval from the province to proceed with elective surgeries using a phased approach, Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) has ramped up its capacity for surgeries. On Monday, February 14, 2022 SMH ramped up to 70 per cent capacity and as of February 22, 2022 has ramped up to 90 per cent capacity, allowing for both urgent and elective surgeries to take place.

“We are thankful that the province has allowed us to provide elective surgeries again, as so many community members are waiting for their turn,” says Jody Levac, President and CEO, SMH. “It’s been a long two years and although we need to always be mindful of capacity to provide critical health care needs and emergency surgeries, we know that we need to provide as much service as we can to those who need it.”

SMH is estimating that 1,000 procedures have been postponed and placed on a wait list. Pre-COVID-19, SMH was performing almost 300 surgeries per month.

“Thank you to all who have been waiting patiently as we supported the hospital during Wave 5 of the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Dr. Syndie Singer, Chief of Surgery, SMH. “Our staff are excited to get back to supporting additional surgeries and providing the care that they know is needed in the community.”

Patients awaiting surgery will be contacted by their physician’s office to be advised of their appointment date.

Information regarding preparing for surgeries is provided to patients in advance of their procedure.
