Mammothon encourages women aged 50+ who are overdue or who have never had a mammogram to make the time, take action and book their appointment. Women are invited to walk into (OR book their mammogram) at Stevenson Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, May 4th, 2016 for a fun-filled day dedicated to their breast health.
From Thunder Bay to New Tecumseth, Mammothon is an event dedicated to screening thousands of women for breast cancer in one-day at a participating Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) imaging site. With over 50 OBSP sites participating in Mammothon, the purpose is to increase access and eliminate common barriers that prevent women from getting screened. “Participating in Mammothon is important for the staff at our OBSP location. Our team wants to make a difference in our community and Mammothon gives us the opportunity to develop teamwork and also raise awareness about the importance of regular breast cancer screening,” says Jeff Kerk, Manager of DI and Lab at SMH. “Regular mammography leads to earlier detection, better treatment options, and a higher chance of survival. Through Mammothon, we are helping women who are overdue for a mammogram to take action, make the time, and get screened for breast cancer.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but only 60 percent of eligible women in Ontario are being screened for breast cancer. According to Cancer Care Ontario, this disease affects one in nine women, most of whom do not have a family history of breast cancer.
