Job Summary

The Director, Facilities, Food and Environmental Services will lead a diverse portfolio including Facilities, Biomedical Engineering, Security, Food Services and Environmental Services and will align projects with respect to redevelopment activities.  This role contributes both strategic and operational insight to the portfolio and contributes to goal accomplishments consistent with the vision, mission, and values of Stevenson Memorial Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

The Director is responsible for the operations of all facilities, biomedical engineering, security, food and environment services. Ensures the systems are in place to monitor key process and outcome metrics. Reviews the policies related to the portfolio and recommends appropriate policy or organizational changes in accordance with federal and provincial regulations and professional and accreditation standards governing the operation of a hospital physical facilities department. Other areas include:
  • Ensures the provision of continuous services to the hospital to include HVAC, water systems, electrical services, fire alarm and firefighting systems, and auxiliary systems
  • Receives, prioritizes, and coordinates the completion of maintenance work requisitions from all departments to ensure services are satisfactorily supplied to all areas of the hospital.
  • Schedules and coordinates projects to maintain or enhance utility services to the hospital.
Human Resources Management
  • Manages a team of staff within assigned teams.
  • Develops, implements, monitors and evaluates functional, service and team operational plans, goals and objectives.
  • Conducts performance appraisals for direct reports.
  • Manages staff issues and complaints (in consultation with the Vice President/CFIO and Human Resources).
Fiscal Responsibility
  • Manages budget allocation for assigned area of responsibility.
  • Monitors and approves purchases associated within the designated portions of the budgets assigned, including supplies, hospital-wide maintenance, outside contractors, etc.
  • Elicits pricing from contracted services for various minor projects and develop cost analysis for these projects.
  • Develops cost analysis for various vendors to ensure hospital is receiving optimum pricing for parts, supplies, etc.


  • University degree in Architecture or Engineering and corresponding professional status or an equivalent combination of academic and practical experience.
  • Five (5) years of progressive leadership experience, preferably in a small/medium community unionized hospital setting.
  • Good working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, Building Accessibility Standards, CSA standards related to building systems, Infection Control during Construction.
  • Knowledge of bylaws, design standards, and planning processes.
  • Understanding of construction law and health and safety standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Food Services delivery.
  • Effective communication skills including listening, presenting, articulate conveyance of messages in an honest, open, transparent and straight-forward style.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including inspiring and motivating staff to achieve outcomes, effective team building techniques and functioning effectively with tact and diplomacy while handling stressful issues.
  • Ability to apply business principles (financial management, human resource management, organizational dynamics and governance, strategic planning, risk management and quality improvement).
  • Models behaviour that is aligned with the values (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence) of Stevenson Memorial Hospital.
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, Weekend work may be required as needed.  As a Director at SMH, you will also be scheduled on a Director on Call rotation that includes nights and weekends.
