Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) opened on June 30, 1928 to serve a population of less than 5, 000. The current facility was built in 1964; at 4,000 square feet, the emergency department was designed to accommodate 7,000 visits per year. The local population now stands at 55,000 and is growing rapidly, taking us beyond the "small hospital" definition. This does not include the 400, 000 tourist visitors to our area each year. Alliston has been targeted by the provincial government as one of its 5 growth areas. With a projected population in 2031 over 90,000. An increasing percentage of that demographic will be in the 65 years or older category.
We must plan now to continue meeting the needs of our community.
