Stevenson Memorial Hospital is a fully accredited facility located in the community of Alliston, Ontario, within the Town of New Tecumseth. The Hospital offers a wide scope of medical and surgical services to a catchment area including Adjala-Tosorontio, Canadian Forces Base Borden, Essa, Innisfil and New Tecumseth.
The Board governs the affairs of the hospital and provides strategic leadership and oversight of operations subject to the Public Hospitals Act, hospital by-laws and other requirements.
Darlene Blendick, Director
Recently retired, Darlene worked for 43 years in the prevention of occupational health and safety injuries, latterly as Vice President, Corporate Services. In this role she was responsible for finance, human resources, communications and information technology. Married for 28 years, Darlene has resided in Adjala-Tosorontio with her husband Bill for over ten years.
Colleen lives in Tottenham with her family and works in Alliston at Feehely Gastaldi. Colleen practiced civil litigation at a Bay Street firm for several years before practicing law in New Tecumseth. She is a member of the Advocates Society and the Ontario Bar Association. Colleen is involved in community organizations and serves as a director for Community Living Association for South Simcoe and Next Step: Literacy Council of South Simcoe and serves as president of the Canadian Alopecia Areata Foundation.
Harry lives in Alliston with his wife Deian and two children, Harish and Haley. They moved to Alliston in 2011 from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Harry is a Certified General Accountant (CGA), a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA), a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) a Chartered Manager and was elected a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (CMgr FCMI) and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management (BBA) from the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside in the United Kingdom. Harry is currently President of Harry Cassie Accounting and Recruiting (HCAR), a full service Staffing Agency and provider of Part-time Controllers to small and medium size businesses. Harry brings to the board a wealth of accounting experience from different sectors including, Not-for-profit, Construction, Financial Services, Staffing, Wholesale and Public Practice Accounting. Harry was recently appointed a member of the Board of Directors and Finance Committee of Children’s Treatment Network (CTN) and also served as a Board Director at Cota.
He has coached high school and university football, high school basketball and has officiated basketball at the national level and baseball at the international and major league level. In the past, Alan served on the finance committee of the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association and on the Board of Directors for Pharmasave Ontario. Alan assumed the role as Board Chair in June 2014. Previously, he chaired the Quality and Governance & Nominating Committees as well as actively participated on many other Board Committees. Alan enjoys semi-retirement in Tottenham with his wife of over 30 years, Aileen.
Paul Edmonds, Director
During his 30 year career in the beverage business, working in Canada, USA and Japan, Paul worked for Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola and Cadbury Schweppes. Areas of responsibility spanned, engineering, logistics, marketing and general management. After leading a Canadian division of Cadbury Schweppes for over a decade as V.P. and Officer, it was time to retire. Previously, Paul holds an Engineering Degree (BASc) and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), both received at University of Toronto. Moving to the Alliston area, 10 years ago with his wife Linda, he created a Marketing Consultancy business focusing on product development and innovation in the food industry, for North American clients.
On the Board of Directors of his condominium corporation for five years, he held various positions as V.P. and Treasurer. He was invited to join Stevenson Memorial Hospital as an Advisory Member on the Finance Committee in 2009. Then, Paul joined the Hospital Board of Directors in 2010.
Paul and his wife have lived in the Alliston area for over 12 years. Paul is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) as well as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA,Illinois). Paul has held senior management positions in finance as well as sales and marketing in a number of different industries including consumer electronics, dental and medical. He most recently was an owner of a medical device company specializing in gastroenterology.
Robert A Jurmalietis, Director
In 1980 after completing his Diploma in Business Management and Marketing from Algonquin College Ottawa, Robert owned and operated a variety of small businesses in the Ottawa Valley. In 1989, he joined the Bank of Nova Scotia in Pembroke Ontario as a Senior Consumer Credit Officer. From that time until now, Robert has assumed various and increasingly complex roles within the Bank in a variety of locations across the province. Also in that time he enjoyed furthering his education, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers, as well as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Robert has always found time to volunteer with various charities and organizations in each community that he has lived and worked in, including Kiwanis, Chair Person for a Relay for Life event for 3 years, Board Member for the Elliot Lake Economic Committee, Deputy Chair for the Town of Georgina Economic Development committee, to name but some.
In September 2013, Scotiabank offered the position of Branch Manager for the Alliston branch of the Bank on the retirement of the outgoing manager. Robert lives in Everett with his wife Diane, and enjoys motorcycle touring, skiing, and visits from his 2 children, and 1 grandchild.
Michael Martin and his family have been residents of Tottenham for more than 10 years. Michael’s extensive experience as a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) working in the role of senior financial officer in both publicly traded and privately held construction companies and a financial services company makes him well suited to serve as Chair of the Board’s Finance Committee. Michael holds both a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and a Masters of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree from University of Toronto. Michael and his wife Catherine run a charitable therapeutic horseback riding organization for people with disabilities from their home in Tottenham.
John Swinden, Past Board Chair
John with his wife Helen have had their home Adjala-Tosorontio for 40 years and are full time residents since 1998. John Swinden is a retired partner from Ernst & Young Toronto where he had a thirty nine year career in many sections of the firm’s practice. His final responsibilities were for risk management when he was based in London UK as the world-wide director of risk management for Ernst & Young International.
John Swinden holds a University of Toronto B.Com and has been elected a Fellow of the Ontario Chartered Accountants Association. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner and holds a certificate in conflict resolution. He has been actively involved in professional and community activities over the years, including a current directorship at Infrastructure Ontario and Van-Rob Inc., and past directorships at Young People's Theatre, Transparency International Canada, and Toronto Summer Music Foundation. He was also president of the University Club of Toronto. Currently he serves as a deacon at St. James Anglican, plays competitive tennis and bridge, skis, gardens and occasionally plays his clarinet.
Jan Tweedy, Director
Janet Tweedy has been a resident of New Tecumseth with her husband since 1974. She had a 31 year career in education which included being a secondary school administrator for a local board of education and a curriculum coordinator and a research consultant for a large city board. She served as chairperson of several professional organizations at the board, provincial and national levels. She travelled Ontario extensively as a trainer for the Ontario Ministry of Education in addition to doing extensive public speaking engagements at professional development workshops and conventions for numerous school boards and organizations. Her management experience ranges from school based to board based and province wide for a variety of positions and projects. She has been on a board of directors for three organizations to date and has served SMH as a Board Director since 2013.
The Chief Executive Officer; Vice-President/Chief Nursing Officer; Chief of Staff, President of the Medical Staff; President of the SMH Foundation and the President of the SMH Auxiliary, are ex officio members of the Board.
Jody Joseph Levac, President & CEO
Jody has been the President & CEO of Stevenson Memorial Hospital since January 2014 and works in partnership with the physicians, hospital staff, and volunteers to oversee the strategic, operational planning and leadership of Stevenson Memorial Hospital.
Jody has worked at Southlake Regional Health Centre since 1999, where he has held leadership positions within the Mental Health Program. In addition to earning his undergraduate (1989 – Laurentian University) and Masters Degree (1991 – University of Toronto) in Social Work, he recently earned his Doctorate in Health Administration (DHA) from the University of Phoenix. Jody was also awarded the Leadership Award of Excellence at Southlake in 2010. In addition to his extensive leadership and clinical skills within the healthcare sector, he was raised in northern Ontario and understands the unique healthcare needs of small, rural communities.
Shannon Landry, Vice-President/Chief Nursing Officer
As Chief Nursing Officer, Shannon brings experience in many different levels of nursing administration and works with all healthcare providers within Stevenson Memorial Hospital. Shannon oversees all clinical areas within the hospital, and supports Pharmacy, Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory Services. Shannon focuses on quality patient care and risk mitigation.
Shannon’s clinical experience has been mainly in the care of newborns and Women’s and Children’s health.
Shannon received her undergraduate degree for a Bachelors of Science in Nursing at McMaster University and in 2006 completed a Masters in Nursing with a nursing administration focus from the University of Toronto. Shannon brings with her a broad spectrum of healthcare experience from hospital services to Ministry of Health and Long Term Care work.
Dr. Oswaldo Ramirez – Chief of Staff
Dr. Oswaldo Ramirez and his wife Belen are active members of the New Tecumseth community. Though recently relocated to King, they continue to work and play in Alliston and on their farm in Adjala-Tosorontio.
Dr. Ramirez received his Bachelors of Science from the University of Toronto. He returned to his native Ecuador to do medical school, but returned to do residency through Dalhousie University in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Since starting private practice in Alliston in 2004, Dr. Ramirez was a founding member of the Alliston Family Health Team, and the Alliston Walk-in clinic. He is an Emergency room physician and has been the Chief of Emergency since 2006. When not seeing patients, Dr. Ramirez can be found fly fishing the local rivers, or hunting on his farm.
Dr. Stephen Tomini – President of Medical Staff
Dr. Tomini grew-up in a rural/remote Northern Ontario town, Elliot Lake. His education includes Honours Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Science from University of Western Ontario; Medicine at University of Ottawa; Family Medicine training in Thunder Bay through McMaster; and PGY-3 anesthesia training Thunder Bay/Hamilton, McMaster. He joined Stevenson in 2006 as an Anesthetist and is also on staff at Headwaters Hospital in Orangeville since 2007. He currently resides in Everett with his wife Krista, who is a member of the Community Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee. He and Krista have three children. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring the local area, skiing, aikido, sailing, wine tasting, and concerts at the Gibson Centre.
Dr. Ihab Khalil – Vice President of Medical Staff
Dr. Khalil joint the Alliston Family Health Team and Stevenson Memorial Hospital in 2011. He takes special interest in practicing a wide range of rural family medicine including office, in-patient hospital care, emergency department work, and walk-in practice. Dr. Khalil enjoys the supportive, friendly and relaxed atmosphere of a rural lifestyle while at the same time have access to the cultural resources of large urban areas.
Previously, he worked as a family physician in rural Manitoba for four and a half years and a Hospitalist, and provided service in an Emergency room, at two nursing homes, a developmental home, as well as a women’s correctional facility and a walk-in clinic. Prior to working in Manitoba, Dr. Khalil was a physician in Egypt and worked in a rural health unit for 12 years.
Dr. Khalil and his wife, Mona, have 3 children. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and travelling.
Ann Hamby – Interim President of Auxiliary
Ann is married with two grown sons and two young granddaughters. She has been retired for 5 years after working as an administrative assistant for BDO Canada’s Alliston office where she worked for 10 years. Prior to that, she worked for the Alliston Herald as the representative for Real Estate and classified advertising and when the children were young, she drove a school bus for 10 years.
Ann has volunteered with the SMH Auxiliary for over 5 years at the Information Desk, Treasurer for the Auxiliary, helping with fundraising activities and occasionally assisting in the Gift Shop. She recently was asked to take on the role of Interim President of the Auxiliary. Prior volunteer experience included various executive positions with the Learning Disabilities Associations of Simcoe County and Ontario. Current interests include singing with the GNO choir and quilting.
Glenn Rae – President of the Foundation
Glenn Rae has been married to his wife Susan for over 50 years and has 3 daughters raising 6 grandchildren.
Glenn moved from Thornhill to Alliston in 2004 and quickly became involved in the Briar Hill community as President of the phase he resides in. He has also held the role of President of the Men’s Golf Association, Treasurer, of the Golf Association of Ontario and a Director on the Briar Hill Community Centre Board.
In 2005, Glenn was elected to the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Board for two years. In 2008, he was elected to the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation Board and has served as a Director and then Vice-Chair for two years. In June 2012, he was elected President of the Hospital Foundation and looks forward to leading the Foundation to achieve their fundraising goals so that state-of-the art equipment can be purchased for the Hospital.
